De-cluttering paperwork: piles

I think everyone knows by now how much I hate piles. We de-clutter and sort things into piles then never get around to putting them away.  They end up shoved on the floor then they migrate across the floor and catch dust before finally being all mixed together again.


Today’s job is to do some pile prevention – don’t let them become clutter again.


I want you to spend 15 minutes wandering around the house, finding piles while they are still at least vaguely organised, and capturing things before they go wild.


OfficeWorks have some handy clear plastic envelope folders for 99cents which are great for this job. You can still see what is in there, but it can’t escape. Write a note to put on top that reminds you what the pile is about – e.g. ‘2011-2012 Tax receipts to be scanned and shredded’.



Better still, don’t create piles in the first place when you are decluttering – only ever sort paper into pre-labelled folders.
